Bernardino Telesio

Philosopher and naturalist, he was born in Cosenza in 1509 and died here in 1588. He was one of the most important exponent of the Renaissance tought, inparticular of that naturalistic current that he tried ti study nature by new means, overcoming the traditional Aristotelian schemes.
According to Telesio, nature shows us the conflict between two opposing forces, heat and cold, that try to mould the matter; heat is the principle of movement, of action, on the contrary cold represents rigidity and stillness. From this phisical theory, Telesio gets to moral indications according to which inspiring and animating principle of our behaviour is necessarily the conservation of heat and thus of our survival. Telesio's theories are exposed in his masterpiece "De Rerum Natura".
